Are you a first-time traveler looking to unravel the wonders of what nature’s best-kept-secret has to offer?  We’ll give you a glimpse of what to expect in this hidden gem of Negros Occidental.

Sipalay: A short history

What once was a command post for Spanish soldiers has transformed into a captivating local destination in the heart of Negros Occidental. From massive floods to separation movements to economic setbacks, all these events have been crucial in shaping what’s now known as present-day Sipalay.

Back in its earliest days, Sipalay was situated in Canman-og River (now known as Sipalay River) and was once under the leadership of Basilio Debuyan. After a destructive flood that swept away the village’s church and plaza, the survivors relocated to a flat forestland across the river, which has become the founding grounds of present-day Sipalay.

For the longest time, Sipalay has been a barangay of Cauayan, until it became a municipality in 1948. It wasn’t until 2001 that it became a city.

During the American regime, Sipalay became a center for sugar production on Negros Island, playing a pivotal role in earning the title “The Jewel of the Sugar Island”.
